THE FIVE FINALIST SPOTS
The second edition of the Best European Film by Women Award introduced a new recognition in the field of advertising communication.
Sustainability is an essential factor in business. It is increasingly necessary to create a virtuous cycle in which social (and environmental) goals are closely tied to economic objectives and brand/product promotion.
Gender equality and the qualitative increase of female presence in commercial production is not just about directors.
We aim to reach all those who believe they are not involved in the issue — but actually are.
Consumers of advertising campaigns still too often steeped in gender stereotypes.
BERRESFORD FERN
Director: Berresford Fern, UK
Spot: Stop the Drop (2024)
Client: Allianz
Advertising Agency: F&B Huskies
Production Company: Motherland
A pile of sports equipment symbolizes the number of children who drop out of sports at the beginning of secondary school. The waste and buildup are effectively portrayed by the director, prompting us to reflect on what we are doing — not only to the planet, but also to those closest to us: our children.
Fern Berresford is a British director and photographer; she lives in London and creates films, music videos, and commercials marked by a dramatic atmosphere. As a commercial director, she has received several accolades, including two British Arrows, two Shark Awards, and a nomination for the Young Director Award at the Cannes Lions Festival.
BOSSI GIADA
Director: Bossi Giada, Italy
Spot: Get used to it (2023)
Client: Pro Infirmis
Advertising Agency: JVM
Production Company: farbfilm studio
In Switzerland, the political participation of people with disabilities is hindered on many levels. Yet, it is their right. Society must “get used to it,” and the director crafted the script around the protagonists, amplifying their voices in a collective manifesto.
Giada Bossi is a director from Varese who primarily works in Milan. After studying Digital Filmmaking at SAE Institute, she graduated in Screenwriting from the Luchino Visconti Film School while beginning her career as a director and videomaker. Her work ranges from documentaries to music videos and commercials for major international brands including Nike, Adidas, and Maserati.
She was nominated as Best New Director at the UKMVAs 2022 for her narrative music video *Quattro Pareti* for Arssalendo, which also received nominations for Best Performance and Best Alternative Emerging Artist. In 2023, she was selected for the Young Director Awards in Cannes and won the Young Guns 21 competition.
BRIDGER LUCY
Director: Bridger Lucy, UK
Spot: Back To School (2023)
Client: The Diana Award
Advertising Agency: Revolt
Production Company: Agile Films
The spot subverts the cheerful, playful tone of traditional “back to school” campaigns to focus on children who are victims of bullying.
Lucy Bridger is a London-based director and screenwriter who primarily creates films, television content, and commercials. Her stories often center on marginalized individuals, and she works with non-professional actors to achieve more authentic performances. Her short film *Mothering* won Best Short Film at the London Short Film Festival in 2019.
BURKE WILDE LIBBY
Director: Burke Wilde Libby, UK
Spot: Reconnecting (2023)
Client: NSPCC (National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children)
Advertising Agency: Calling Studio
Production Company: NEW LAND
Inspired by testimonies from new mothers, the spot captures the isolation and loneliness experienced by many women after childbirth. The storytelling blends cinematic quality with advertising, featuring skilled actors and a narrative approach on par with male counterparts — see *Me, My Autism and I* by Tom Hooper.
Libby Burke Wilde is a British director primarily focused on music videos and commercials. Her work often centers on social issues, such as in her short film *ABSENT*, made in collaboration with the charity Freedom4Girls to address the lack of access to safe menstrual products. The film won a Shark Award for Best Short Film Under 5 Minutes in 2019.
GUIDONE MARIA

Client: Frecciarossa

A boy and a girl meet on a Frecciarossa train, exchange social contacts, and promise to see each other again the following week in Venice. The train becomes a sentimental journey through the Italian landscape.
Maria Guidone is an Italian director who graduated from the École Supérieure des Études Cinématographiques in Paris. She created her first short films between 2005 and 2008 between Puglia and France, where she also worked as assistant director and editor for the documentary series *Grand Art*. HANCOCK LAURA
Director: Hancock Laura, Denmark, United States
Spot: Crossing Borders Made Easy (2024)
Client: Skånetrafiken
Advertising Agency: Infab
Production Company: HOBBY
The spot focuses on the imaginative attempts of some Danes to reach Sweden. Danish humor is quite different from ours, but for Hancock, performance is the heart of comedy because “if you’re going to make something funny, you have to have fun doing it.”
Comedy is Laura Hancock’s great passion, and her bold, fun, and creative personality is present in every aspect of her directing work, which bursts with energy and Danish humor. Hancock is currently working on a number of comedy projects for television, as well as a documentary series funded by the Danish Film Institute (DFI).
HUDSON GEORGIA
Director: Hudson Georgia (UK)
Spot: Imperfect You (2023)
Client: Nike Japan
Advertising Agency: WEIDEN + KENNEDY JAPAN
Production Company: PARK PICTURES
Georgia Hudson broke through years ago by taking a language often (unfortunately) perceived as “masculine,” making it her own, and transforming it into something gender-free.
The protagonist, Aika, faces self-imposed pressure to get good grades, secure a stable job, and compare herself to peers on social media.
The spot encourages Gen Z in Japan to break free from the pressure of perfection and express the power of sport.
Georgia began her career in music videos — earning a nomination for “Best Director” in the UK in 2019. She was named “Director of the Year, Europe” by *Shots*.
NADIA MARQUARD OTZEN
Director: Nadia Marquard Otzen (Denmark)
Spot: Join the Movement (2023)
Client: Levi’s
Advertising Agency: Spring Marketing Consulting LPP
Production Company: new—land
A powerful spot featuring an honest and carefully crafted visual narrative that explores fleeting moments of lyricism, intimacy, and a curious gaze that (finally) knows how to tell the “B-side” of the story.
Otzen’s passion for blending music and film led her naturally into music videos, earning her numerous awards and nominations, including the MVA for Best New Director and a Grammy for Best Video.
Her many commercial projects — including Levi’s, Ikea, Velux, and Hudson’s Bay — continue to build on her love of storytelling, combining fiction with real people and places.
It’s no surprise that *Campaign* named her one of the ten directors to watch.
PEDRIZZETTI CINZIA
Director: Pedrizzetti Cinzia, Italy
Spot: Vincere gli stereotipi (2023)
Client: Tim
Advertising Agency: Havas Milan
Production Company: Think Cattleya
A young girl, a fan of the Italian Women’s National Football Team, dreams of following in the footsteps of her idols — pushing beyond prejudices that remain a difficult barrier in sports traditionally dominated by men.
The director had already made her mark in 2022 with a Chevrolet commercial for the Mexican market, where she showcased the strength of the product — and made it clear the real strength was hers. Now, she returns with a new, deeply intense work.
Cinzia Pedrizzetti was born in Italy, but studied and launched her career abroad, working between Florida, Spain, and Buenos Aires. She specialized as a commercial director and has produced numerous campaigns for international brands. She has also developed photographic projects, including *PosSession*, created in collaboration with San Vittore prison to portray female incarceration.
